Followed by the teachings on 23rd and 24th of April, Tsadong Rinpoche Ngawang Tenzin continued the teachings of The Importance of Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels on Sunday 8th of May 2016. With the focus on Compassion, Good Conduct and Right View, Rinpoche guided us through two very essential core teachings of The Ten Virtuous Deeds and the Four Opponent Powers.

Two Aspects of Buddhism.

Method – taming body, speech and mind.

Dharma Path – realisation of the true path and realisation of the true cessation.

The method is learning to rely on ourselves by taming our mind, body and speech. When the mind becomes tamed, the body becomes tamed. When the body becomes tamed our speech becomes better. We have to learn to rely on our own practise to save ourselves and therefore we take refuge.

What is taking refuge? Refuge means reliance. Do we take refuge to money, fancy watches or a new Iphone etc.? Yes, we do without really being aware of it. In mundane life we often are confused and take refuge in material things falsely thinking that they will provide us with happiness, security and also we think through the material gain we can be free from sufferings.

In Buddhism, there are two reasons for taking refuge and three objects to take refuge to.

The two reasons are the fears and the faith. In here, all the practitioners holding the same faith but the fears are different for the three scopes. For the modest scope, they take refuge with the fear of reincarnation in one of the three lower realms. For persons of medium scope they take refuge with the fear of samsara itself, all the six realms are in the circle of samsara. For the persons of high scope they take refuge with the fear of the sufferings that are experiencing by all sentient beings.

The three objects are Three Jewels.

The Three Jewels are the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha.

- We go for refuge to the Buddha Jewel

There are four conditions of the Buddha Jewels:

1. All obscurations are removed and there are no afflictions.
2. Perfectional Skill – Buddha attained omniscient mind, so he is able to see the habituation of a student and accordingly teaches the student to their capacity.
3. Equality – Accumulating the merit and wisdom, this wisdom brings about unbiased compassion. Their loving kindness is equal to all sentient beings, not just to those near and dear.
4. Will do anything for anyone or any sentient being regardless of what happens to self.

- We go for refuge to the Dharma Jewel

Dharma is the truth of the path and the truth of the cessation. Through effort slowly goodness and kindness increase, and when we are on the path our merit increases, due to the law of causality.

- We go for refuge to the Sangha Jewel

In this context, when we refer to Sangha Jewel, they are the Dharma practitioners who realised at least The Path of Seeing.

The most important object for our own practise is the Dharma Jewel. And the basis of
Dharma path is the The Ten Virtuous Deed.

The Ten Virtuous Deeds
Ten Good Deeds are - all based on compassion

1. No killing – compassion won’t allow you to kill
2. No stealing
3. No sexual misconduct. Not hurting others by sexual misconduct
(The above 3 deeds apply to the body)

4. No lying – e.g. claiming to be clairvoyant
5. No double tongued speech – e.g. creating division between friends, family or spiritual community
6. No abusive speech e.g. no sarcasm and harsh words
7. No irresponsible speech – e.g. interrupting someone who is practising with idle chatter
(The above 4 deeds apply to speech)

8. No hatred once it is in the mind stream it can then move to the body and then to the speech
9. No greed – greed leads to stealing and leads to lust (sexual misconduct)
10. No wrong view - eg. not believing in the law of causality.
(The above 3 deeds apply to the mind. Consequently they also show in the body and the speech.)

From the beginningless time, with the three poisons within us, we have created lots of bad
Karma. Because of this, we need to apply The Four Opponent Powers for purification.

THE FOUR OPPONENT POWERS
1. Power of Reliance
   a. By taking refuge to the Three Jewels
   b. Generation of bodhicitta

This reliance is the antidote to the bad deeds that have been committed to the Three Jewels and for the harm we have done to sentient beings.

2. Power of the Antidote
   a. Recitation of Mantras
   b. Taking refuge in the three Jewels

3. Power of Repentance
The realisations of how much harm we have done and the determination to never repeat the same destructive actions. Regret increases through the fear of bad karma.

4. The Power of Remedy
Applying the antidote and the determination of not repeating the bad deeds, gradually after some months, the change takes place.
